Launch of the State of the World’s Volunteerism Report 2015 – Transforming Governance

The State of the World’s Volunteerism Report 2015 is the first global review of the power of volunteer voices to help improve the way people are governed. Titled “Transforming Governance”, this report draws on evidence from countries as diverse as Brazil, Kenya, Lebanon and Bangladesh, and shows how ordinary people are volunteering their time, energies and skills to improve the way they are governed and engaged at local, national and global levels. Better governance at every level is a pre-requisite for the success of the new set of targets for future international development, the Sustainable Development Goals, which are due to be agreed at the United Nations in September 2015.

As you are already aware, demand for greater civic participation and engagement has emerged strongly in the discussions around the post-2015 development agenda. This report makes a robust case for volunteers as catalysts of civic engagement in development processes, making them critical agents of change for achieving sustainable development.

The Report and its executive summary can be accessed on the Volunteer Action Counts website in English, French and Spanish. The executive summary is also available in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese and Russian. In the coming months, full versions of the report will also be available in Arabic and German.

In the coming months, events will be organised in many parts of the world to debate and discuss the issues raised by the report. We count on your engagement and support to take the messages of the report to your key constituencies. Our sincere hope is that this report will lead to greater understanding and appreciation of the contributions of volunteerism to governance and its potential for affecting change.
